Promoting Happiness and Wellbeing in North East England

"It was fantastic to be in an environment where people opened up about their life experiences and had a common understanding of how mental health and stigma had affected their lives growing up at a particular time in the North East, and the impact that has on people." - Angela Slater, TTC

DEAR DIARY

Today, I had the pleasure of spending time in the company of local women. They were a small group of elders whose ages by my reckoning totalled close on one thousand years. Where else but in an ancient North East market town on a grey Monday morning could I have alighted on women with such a wealth of folk-wisdom at their finger-tips.  I am (by association),

North East/Proud.

I quickly learn that Aspire Learning, Support and Wellbeing (the organisation visited) is a women-only training centre based in Chester-le-Street, Durham. Aspire has been providing services formally delivered by The Bridge Project since September 2012. The centre is a place for women to meet, learn and socialise. The organisation was awarded the title ‘Cornerstone of the Community’ by Newcastle Building Society in 2013.  I am (by association),

North East/Proud.

My companion on this outing to Aspire was Angela Slater who is the North East Regional Co-ordinator for Time to Change.  We were there to promote the Durham Happiness Challenge, a free event for older people.  We did, indeed, spread the word and, should you be interested, you can find the report on 'the Durham event' by clicking on LOVE ONE ANOTHER.  I am (by association),

North East/Proud.

One thing led to another and, as women of any age do, we quickly settled into an impromptu storytelling session - with the contents of my Memory Box providing much food for thought and even an excuse for a tear or two.  As if any of us needed an excuse!  As it turned out, none of our lives was without mishap, loss, and sadness. For more, see BORN A LADY.  I am (by association),

North East/Proud.

The Aspire women turned out to be Durham born and bred: they speak the same language; they share the same history. Thanks to their collective wisdom, I return home to search out the significance of my butterfly trinket. This quotation says it all, 'We delight in the beauty of the butterfly, but rarely admit the changes it has gone through to achieve that beauty.'  I can see clearly now. I thank the mature women of Aspire. I am (by association),

North East/Proud.

DEAR DIARY

Last week, I had the pleasure of reading Dr. Larry Dossey's latest book, One Mind: How our individual mind is part of a greater consciousness and why it matters.  A great read - highly recommended. As back-up, here's what Lynne McTaggert (author of The Field) has to say about Larry Dossey's book:

"This beautifully rendered masterwork from one of our most cherished sages of the spirit makes an elegant and indisputable case for human consciousness as a singular entity.

"The sheer weight of mind-boggling evidence and compelling stories - from near-death experience and reincarnation, to creativity, ESP, and crowd intelligence - demolishes the current 'mind equals brain' theory of modern science and expands our perception of how the world works.

"One Mind is Larry Dossey's boldest and most majestic work to date, with a powerful lingering message: nature has designed us to stay connected forever." Lynne McTaggert

In 2013, Larry Dossey received the prestigious Visionary Award that honours a pioneer whose visionary ideas have shaped integrative healthcare and the medical profession.

A related good read ear-marked for next week' holiday is Dr. Lothar Schäfer's latest book, Infinite Potential: What Quantum Physics Reveals About How We Should Live.  So, it's thinking cap on again for a hopeful and controversial view of the universe and ourselves based on the principles of quantum physics.  This is the synopsis:

"In Infinite Potential, physical chemist Lothar Schäfer presents a stunning view of the universe as inter-connected, nonmaterial, composed of a field of infinite potential, and conscious.

"With his own research as well as that of some of the most distinguished scientists of our time, Schäfer moves us from a reality of Darwinian competition to co-operation, a meaningless universe to a meaningful one, and a disconnected, isolated existence to an inter-connected one.

"He shows us that our potential is infinite and calls us to live in accordance with the order of the universe, creating a society based on the cosmic principle of connection, emphasising cooperation and community."

Here is a chance for us to see our world in a new way; to understand the relationship between science, our souls, our moral behaviour, and our mental and emotional lives.  Sounds good to me ...

Before signing off, I would ask you to spare a thought for those who are sad and lonely, especially the elderly and the distressed. Always remember: "We delight in the beauty of the butterfly, but rarely admit the changes it has gone through to achieve that beauty." ~ Author Unknown
