Moves Mountains - Freedom Next Exit

Sweet conversation.

Looking back, the two people who most influenced me as a young person were my husband's mother and someone I worked for.  She was a home-maker; he was a head-teacher. Despite the differences in educational attainment, job descriptions and life-styles, they were bound by a common humanity: a love of the preciousness of everyone. In addition, they were quite (quite!) clear on matters of love, truth and justice. Spontaneous, natural and joyful conversations ensued.

Conversation is a meeting of minds with different memories and habits.

Moves mountains.

These sweet conversations are long-remembered not just for the wisdom imparted, but also for the humour shared, this conveyed by the twinkling eyes (of the one) and the quizzical lift of an eyebrow (of the other).  On them, I tried everything out for size as I delicately explored and happily practised the art (and science) of classroom teaching. I had found my calling and my niche - so why wouldn't I be happy? For the entire 25-year span of my teaching career, I was encouraged, supported and counselled by gifted mentors. They also listened attentively ... with eyes, ears, heart (and mind).  Moves mountains.  Ask me.

When minds meet, they don't just exchange facts: they transform them, reshape them, draw different implications from them, and engage in new trains of thought.

Conversational talks/conferences.

Research (and anecdotal evidence) informs us that public speaking sits near the top of life's most feared challenges.  This brings me yet again to today's innovative young people, friends who stand tall and straight to speak out on issues often in variance with the 'conventional wisdom' in matters related to the mind. Their immediate task is to hone to perfection a powerful method of communication, the art (and science) of public speaking. As they go about learning their craft, they are also practising listening and conversational skills. Inevitably, they are the creators and collaborators of a changing world - each and every one making a difference.

Conversation doesn't just reshuffle the cards: it creates new cards.

Storytelling.

Last week, I was given a rare opportunity to try out the Conversational Talk - as described in my last blog, A COMMON HUMANITY. Yesterday, I even got the chance to attend my very first Conversational Conference. Bravo, to participants at both events!  In relation to my own (very public) conversational talk, my birth mother was (luckily for me) a natural and gifted storyteller.  As some will be aware, we women tend to morph into replicas of our mothers as we age. I am no exception; I am now my mother. So, as a storyteller of a certain age, unusual insight and long experience, I am also (as was my mother) 'North East and Proud'.

In addition, I am always and forever a DURHAM miner's daughter, someone with exactly the same passion for local history, national politics, world economics, and education for all people - everywhere. From one gift comes many.

Come out and play.

In the wind of the present moment, "Let's create an atmosphere of peace around ourselves. Imagine that we are like a mother whose children come home crying about fights at school. Would it be her job to soothe their wounds or to arm them for fighting back tomorrow? Simplistic as it may sound, the male principle of aggression can only be healed by the feminine principle of nurturing and love."  Deepak Chopra

Focus: I give my spontaneous, natural, and joyful self permission to 'come out and play'.

The 'you' inside is that same innocent, spontaneous child that you were — the one who was amazed at the beauty of a dandelion flower, or that could find immense joy in splashing around in a mud puddle — that playful being who enjoyed the present and did not concern itself about "proper" and acceptable societal norms (i.e. dirty clothes, weeds on the lawn, 'proper' attire and behavior, etc.). That spontaneous, natural, and joyful person still resides inside of you. All you need to do is give it permission to 'come out and play'.

We can now step forth from behind our masks and take the risk to be real... to express our joys, our fears, our insecurities, our love, our hopes, and our dreams. I am free to be me! I can allow myself to be spontaneous. I can let myself be real and feel my feelings, express the truth as I see it in the present moment, and let my love for life radiate from my being, expressed in my thoughts, words, and actions.

Trust yourself! You are an innocent, joyful being. Within you are the seeds of joy, happiness, and success. Affirm: "I am free to be me! I am free to express myself in whatever ways seem loving and true to my inner being. I am free to create the world I want around me. I have the right to express my inner divinity and to live a life of love, joy, and creativity.  Marie T. Russell.

 Just do it, ask yourself:

'WHO IN THE WORLD AM I?'

I wonder if I’ve been changed in the night?  Let me think.
Was I the same when I got up this morning?
I almost think I can remember feeling a little different.
But if I’m not the same, the next question is,
‘Who in the world am I?’  Ah, that’s the great puzzle!

— Lewis Carroll, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, 1865

Reflection

Choosing To Be

Above your Bottom Line is the place of No-choice. Everything there is caught in a close-knit web of mutual conditioning, and freedom is a dream. The Bottom Line itself is the place of Choice. Here is the only place where freedom is real, seeing that there’s nothing to bind or be bound. Here you – you as you really, really are – make that supreme and stress-free and only real Choice which Hamlet could not make. What stress that failure cost him! You choose to be. Here You freely decide to be, not just the Origin of all things, but of Yourself. No: it isn’t Hobson’s choice. You don’t have to be. There’s absolutely no one and nothing below You to give rise to You. Look, You are choosing to come up with Yourself right now and right here. How You do it is the Mystery. Accept my congratulations! (Douglas Harding. Head Off Stress.)
