DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER

To be loved deeply gives you strength, to be loved unconditionally gives you courage.

What follows are just five of the many proverbs I learned at my mother's knee; these are old sayings handed down through the generations.  Proverbs are the element of language that best encapsulates a society's values and beliefs.

  1. A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush ...
  2. Too many cooks spoil the broth ...
  3. A stitch in time saves nine ...
  4. There's no smoke without fire ...
  5. A good man is hard to find ...

We all have something of the wild child inside of us and subtle checks and balances are lodged into our psyche as we grow.  If they are not, then someone hasn't been doing their job and we're probably in a bit of trouble. But, as parents, school teachers (and probably doctors) are fond of saying, You can take a horse to water, but you can't make it drink.

Despite the checks and balances that were installed into me when I was young, the wild child still surfaces. However, I should mention that my parents believed in Nature's way; and they were wise enough to know that I wouldn't be 'Our Marian' if they tried to change things. No second-guessing here; it was their certainty. So, thanks to the wisdom of 'a natural philosophy', I grew to be a free spirit and a free thinker - as did my siblings. The message is to cherish children, rather than try to change them. Follow Nature's way and you can't go far wrong.

If you look deeply into the palm of your hand, you will see your parents and all generations of your ancestors. All of them are alive in this moment. Each is present in your body. You are a continuation of these people. THICH NHAT HANH

Ancestral wisdom has imprinted on my very soul a conviction that, in matters of the mind, Nature's way is to leave well alone and therefore the usual interventions are not for me. Although I may recognise their value in existential crisis, I prefer the guidance of my own inner wisdom enhanced by the self-healing strategies of positive psychology. I have also developed an absolute delight in philosophy and spirituality, both of which have helped me maintain equilibrium and expand my world view.

Looking back, I realise I have been fortunate in that the right people have appeared in my life at the right time and in the right place. Thus it is that knowledge, skills and understandings are passed on and important lessons are learnt.  Learning is as natural as day follows night, always has been and always will be.  It's exactly the same for all of us.  That's Nature's way, too.  It's how we grow.

I am saddened that many people are stuck fast in the belief that there's a pill to cure every ill - including heart-break, sadness, loneliness, and isolation.

This is an urban myth.

There is plenty of literature around on the harmful effects of toxic chemicals on the brain and on the body. The effects are real, dangerous, and often remain hidden for years.

These are effects; not side effects.

This is a plea for a real change of heart in seeing drugs as a first-choice treatment for problems of the mind. Many people experience terror, perplexity and fear as a direct result of prescribed medication.  There are known dangers to delicate neural pathways in the brain and this is especially so over the long-term.

Transformation - a big idea.

It takes willpower and creativity to transform a belief system embedded in traditional practices and hierarchies.  Never has it been more important that we tap into and rekindle the 'soft skills' that are inherent in all of us.  Without this act of faith, transformation of health care will stay a dream.

Jump time.

Throughout the world, a search is on for models of care in tune with the spirit of the age. This suggests a radical shift of perspective towards co-operation rather than competition; unity rather than separation. "Life shrinks or expands in proportion to one's courage." - Anais Nin.

Communication, like imagination is key.

I'll  remind you now of the fairy stories that helped shape your psyche, as they did mine.  Without access to a prince or princess, a good  fairy, a guardian angel, or a fairy godmother, where would we be? Walt Disney built an empire on happy endings.

  • Cinderella
  • Jack in the Beanstalk
  • Red Riding Hood
  • Puss in Boots
  • Dick Whittington

Alas, too much imagination can be anything but a blessing; I am certainly not alone in having experienced another reality. But, some things you can't change or even properly comprehend.  Nor indeed do I wish to share a sacred gift that has surfaced only at the lowest and loneliest times of my life. Something I will share are words of hope from a present-day philosopher.  Fundamental realizations are often gift-wrapped in a crises.  If we can fully grasp their meaning, we need not suffer their drama again.  KRAMER, 2012

We've all welcomed magic moments into our lives and, having given the matter some thought, I am convinced that I've experienced more than most. I sincerely believe that this has contributed, at least in part, to why I'm still standing today. Memories of good times acted as balance and ballast when things were unimaginably grim - heart sinking - I nearly went down with the ship.

Nearly, but not quite.

This website of mine has all the trappings of the electronic book of the future. Four years in the making, it has a title, chapters, pages, and millions (and millions) of carefully chosen words. By dint of much effort, it is kept up-to-date and constantly on the move.

This is the secret.  And, it's free ...

Writing on the web is now an intrinsic part of my life and I wouldn't have it any other way. In sharing our stories with a global community, in being able to write them down, and have them travel world-wide to people of other lands, we are indeed a blessed generation. We all become learners and teachers; we all become connected and connectors.

Rejoice at the birth of a brand new story.  We are the first to realise the power of Qwerty when coupled with the electronic wizardry of today. The World Wide Web is an experience not to be missed; it's another first for Planet Earth; it's an opportunity to flourish. We are all benefitting from new networks of people and an information revolution.

Without further ado, I invite you to explore a new world of evolutionary change:

Make history come alive for you and your family.  Have your say; voice your opinion; draw conclusions; argue a case; or simply describe an event.  Be a critical friend of all that is and all that has been.  Be a good influence on all that is to come.
As a free spirit, I was at home in Nature as a child.  I am well-aware that a strong constitution was aided and abetted by my mother's insistence on playing outside in the fresh air, regular exercise, sugarless food, early nights, and ... dock leaves.  Indeed, dock leaves featured heavily in my life and cured many a case of nettle rash, an itch that still returns as a trace-memory from the past.

Now read and digest this, an email received this very morning from a beautiful woman with a twinkle in her eye, someone who has chosen to make her home among the friendly people of North East England.  I introduce Lesley Barefoot as belonging (like me) to a generation at home in Nature ... and dock leaves.

Dear Marian,
  • HERBS
  • HEALTH
  • HEALING
We hope you and people you are in touch with may be interested in a new course on helping yourself with herbs and plants.
Most people know that a dock leaf laid gently on a nettle sting will ease the irritation. There are many other instances where we can help ourselves.
Now there's a chance to learn about some simple but very well-tried help that is available from plants.
"Herbs, Health and Healing" will be on Saturday 28th April from 10am to 3.30pm and costs only £35.
Bookings are now being taken for the course at 30 Roker Park Road. Ring 0191 548 3722 or 07714 373521 to book one of the limited places on this course (or email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. )
It will be run by very experienced professional herbalist, Jill Schabel. She can be contacted at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. .
Many thanks,
Lesley Barefoot

Our knowledge has made us cynical; our cleverness, hard and unkind. We think too much and feel too little. More than machinery, we need humanity. More than cleverness, we need kindness and gentleness. — Charlie Chaplin, in 'The Great Dictator'
