HAPPINESS AND WELLBEING
Marian Moore (pictured above) is a North East storyteller and an expert through experience in mental health. She’s one of those people who knew right from early childhood what her destiny would be. And, she’s one of those people who, throughout their lives, have left no stone unturned in their pursuit of excellence. Marian has a love of learning and a boundless enthusiasm that allows her to ‘run with an idea’. In the changing Britain of the 1980s the idea was ‘education for enterprise’; in the changing world of today the idea is, ‘What makes us happy?’
The pursuit of happiness appears to be a universal phenomenon. When people are interviewed about what they want most in life, the majority state that they want to be happy. And, whilst we would all like to feel happier simply because it is a pleasant feeling, there are also wider benefits associated with happiness. Happy people have better health, are more productive, are more successful, have better relationships with others and are generally more helpful and caring. On the other hand, unhappy people are more prone to illness and they tend to be withdrawn and inactive.
Marian believes – along with many other people all over the world – that happiness and how to increase happiness is a worthwhile subject to investigate. Watch the growth of a movement that emphasises what is right with people rather than what is wrong with them. Join Marian, the life-long learner and teacher, as she delves deep into the literature and tries it out for size.
BIOGRAPHY UPDATE - July 2015:
Since 2001, Marian Moore has dedicated herself to tackling the stigma and discrimination associated with mental ill health and distress.
- Until recent years, her anti-stigma work involved Government-funded 'Shift lectures' on the reporting of mental health and suicide in the press, this to student journalists in universities throughout England
- From 2006-2014 Marian regularly presented a patient’s perspective to third-year medical students from local university medical schools as they began their mental health training.
- An experienced public speaker, she has spoken to women's groups on ageing with vitality, to academics on hearing voices, on emotional wellbeing to the service user fraternity, and on recovery to MHFA trainees.
- Marian runs her own emotional wellbeing consultancy and is webmaster for this website. She was Head of Business Studies at a local school for 18 years and holds a BA/BSc (Open) degree in politics, economics and education.
- During her working life, she was also closely linked to Sunderland Polytechnic as a teacher/consultant in Business Studies. She was Student of the Year when she finished her teacher training at this institution.
- Marian is an advocate for life-long learning, talking therapies, writing for health, recovery colleges, and peer support as aids to recovery from mental distress. In retirement, she is a Volunteer/Champion for Time to Change and also a Volunteer/Governor for a local mental health trust (NTW).
- Finally, my friends, what I do know for certain is that viewing life in the round and with an 'appreciative gaze' pays dividends for me and those around me.

S U C C E S S I N L I F E
byRalph Waldo Emerson
To laugh often and much;
To win the respect of intelligent people
and the affection of children;
To earn the appreciation of honest critics
and endure the betrayal of false friends;
To appreciate beauty;
To find the best in others;
To leave the world a bit better,
Whether by a healthy child, a garden patch,
or a redeemed social condition;
To know even one life has breathed easier
because you have lived.
This is to have succeeded.
