Some Thoughts on Solitude
by
Marian Moore
My Friends,
Note well the words of the worthy old proverb (above) and of the beautiful old poem (below) ~
- “You don’t need to leave your room.
- Remain sitting at your table and listen.
- Don’t even listen, simply wait.
- Don’t even wait.
- Be quite still and solitary.
- The world will freely offer itself up to you.
- To be unmasked, it has no choice.
- It will roll in ecstasy at your feet.” FRANZ KAFKA
That you and I are here by accident or design - who knows?
But, in 'unmasking' this blog from the depths of my sub-conscious, I could no longer resist the pull of the Sarah Maycock illustration (above), something strategically placed in my computer some years ago to sit, seemingly forever, as a stark/chilling reminder of the years when solitude seemed my only choice. And, neither could I resist the spell-binding essay on solitude (and release from same) that more recently happened my way.
Electronic miracles aside, here's a smidgen of John Burnside's lovely essay, this followed by where 'flying in on a wing and a prayer' led me this time. But first, it's worth reminding ourselves of the magic of being as described by a Positive Psychologist: "When we open ourselves up to the wonder of the universe, we see more wonders. Then we ourselves can be seen as wonders. It feels good to be seen." LOUIS ALLORA
The release from solitude? 'If it does not lead us back to society, it can become a spiritual dead end.'

Now, please, consider ...
- A smidgen of John Burnside's essay at its conclusion
- The Visitor: Solitude is enlightening but if it does not lead us back to society, it can become a spiritual dead end.
"It is one of the great paradoxes of solitude, that it offers us not an escape, not a paradise, not a dwelling place where we can haughtily maintain our integrity by ignoring a vicious and corrupt social world, but a way back to that world, and a new motive for being there. Moreover, it can enliven a new sense of what companionship means — and, with it, a courtesy and hospitability that goes beyond anything good manners might decree. Because, no matter who I am, and no matter what I might or might not have achieved, my very life depends on being prepared, always, for the one visitor who never comes, but might arrive at any moment, from the woods or from the town." JOHN BURNSIDE

- In Nelson Mandela's Inaugural Speech
- he read this poem by Marianne Williamson:
- Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
- Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
- It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us.
- We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?
- Actually, who are you not to be?
- You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world.
- There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other
- people won't feel insecure around you.
- We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us.
- It is not just in some of us, it is in everyone.
- And as we let our own light shine,
- we unconsciously give other
- people permission to do the same.
- As we are liberated from our own fear,
- our presence automatically liberates others.
